Travelling to Bristol

map of Bristol showing M4 and M5 connections

Bristol Temple Meads is the main train station providing links across the country, including trains to London Paddington and Waterloo every 30 minutes. Bristol Parkway station is outside the city centre, but also has trains running to London and across the country.

There are also scheduled coach links to most major UK cities from the new Bristol Bus and Coach Station.

The city is connected by road on an east-west axis from London to Wales by the M4 motorway, and on a north-southwest axis from Birmingham to Exeter by the M5 motorway. The drive from London via the M4 is less than two hours. The M32 allows direct access from the M4 and terminates at Bristol.

Bristol International Airport Logo

Bristol International Airport is 8 miles south of the city and is the fastest growing regional airport in the UK, serving all major destinations including daily direct flights to New York and Easyjet links to Europe. The opening of the new terminal has further increased the capability of this airport.

Enjoying Bristol

You can find detailed information including restaurants, hotels and upcoming events by visiting the Visit Bristol website. We have listed a few of our favourite places and events below:

Prom on the the Close celebrations

Each July, Clifton College hosts Prom on the Close. This year on Saturday 7th July 2007 we are delighted to welcome Russell Watson and All Angels to headline a concert that is now Bristol's best-established social event of the summer. They will be accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nick Davies.

The evening will also feature some fantastic performances by the Clifton College choir and musicians, giving music lovers a rare opportunity to witness the very best young talent in the country in action.

To add to this spectacular event, the 4 founding aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly together over the concert arena (subject to suitable weather conditions).

Bristol Balloon Fiesta

Each August, the city is host to the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, one of Europe's largest hot air balloon events. In summer the grounds of Ashton Court to the west of the city play host to the Fiesta, a major event for hot-air ballooning in the UK. The Fiesta draws a substantial crowd even for the early morning lift that typically begins at about 6.30 am. Events and a fairground entertain the crowds during the day. A second mass ascent is then made in the early evening, again taking advantage of lower wind speeds.
