West Town

In West Town it is hoped that all girls will reach their potential and will strive for excellence. Leadership and team work are both important aspects of an education and girls in the house are given the chance to organise events, activities or groups for House competitions. Girls are encouraged to take part in a large variety of activities and to try new ones so that they can find out their strengths and weaknesses and gain an all round education. It helps them to broaden their horizons and develop new skills and friendships.

History

West Town is the only solely day house for girls at present and completed the four points of the compass when it joined the three day houses for boys. It started in September 1991 with a small number of girls and has gone from strength to strength, and is has over 60 girls. It is situated opposite the Close on College Road at number 24, where the American Generals were housed during the Second World War, when the school was evacuated to Bude.

House Strengths

Here a student can get the best of both worlds with great facilities during the day and the chance to be treated just the same as the boarders are, with the same opportunities, coupled with the chance to go home at night! Life is very full and great friendships are forged here.

West Town is lucky enough to have good sportswomen, musicians, artists, performers and academics. A fantastic tutorial team and house matron also support the work of the Housemistress.

House Activities

There are House competitions in art, drama, a large variety of sports, music, singing and debating and representatives are chosen to put the views of the girls in West Town on charities, food, library and general school matters.

The House supports the education of a little girl in Ecuador and organises a performance of music, poetry and drama evening each year in order to raise money for her. Other charitable events have involved a 'sleep out' for Shelter, Quiz Nights and sponsored events. All third formers get a chance to have a sleep over in the House Hall in the first few weeks and there are outings to the theatre, to cinema and supper parties. There is a great sense of pride in the House and girls are very competitive and extremely successful, but they are also extremely supportive of each other.
