Watson's House
There is a distinct family feel to the House with an atmosphere in which boys are as likely to mix across year groups as within. The House has a civilised nature: the boys are considerate and purposeful.
History
Founded in 1878 by Reverend H.C.Watson, the House lived at 30 College Road. In 2004 we moved into our new, 21st Century accommodation on Guthrie Road. This
modern boarding house benefits from imaginative architecture to provide warm, airy and light accommodation. The House enjoys relaxing in several common rooms,
a library and on the roof garden. Study-bedrooms all have comfortable beds and desks with internet access: all sixth form rooms are singles with their own sink
or en suite shower; junior boys share double or triple rooms.
House Ethos
Watson's is a small, mostly boarding, house. There is a distinct family feel to the House with an atmosphere in which boys are as likely to mix across year
groups as within. The House has a civilised nature: the boys are considerate and purposeful.
House Activities
House sport includes football, basketball, water polo, fives, squash, sailing, pool, chess, table football and much more. Memorable recent weekend sorties
include camping in the Black Mountains or sailing to a deserted South Coast beach and camping under open skies.
Old Watsonians
2007 leavers: Another very successful year with A level examinations. Of nine applicants to university, eight secured their first choice places and
one his second. Two boys are taking gap years and one returns to study in Germany.
Recent leavers: Jon Yarker graduated this year as first in Tripos for History of Art at Cambridge. Steve Rowbotham was a member of the GB
rowing squad, and is hoping to go to Beijing. Matthew Holdcroft was winner of the BBC’s University Challenge 2004, with Magdelen College, Oxford. Matthew is
one of eight successful Oxbridge applicants in the past five years.
Famous Old Watsonians include: Sir John Kendrew, scientist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1962; Sir David Wilcocks,
composer and conductor; and Simon Russell Beale, actor.
