Clifton College WebsiteChildlike MaturityIn C.S. Lewis' dedication to his goddaughter, Lucy Barfield, at the front of his classic fairy story-cum-allegory The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, he recognised that she would not be a little girl by the time that she had the opportunity to read the story for herself. However, he wrote, "Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again." Some adults are courageous enough to journey beyond the limits of rationalism and reductionism. When they do, they are ready to hear and welcome new, mysterious and spiritual promptings in the human search for meaning in life. Sometimes, we have to mature into childlikeness. To become a Christian, to enter the Kingdom of God, simply requires a person to be open-hearted; to let go of self-centredness, to be prepared to discover new things; to let God be God. 5 May 2008 © 2006-8 Clifton College |
