Welcome to the Old Cliftonian Society

Old Boys and Girls of Clifton College

The Old Cliftonian Society is a very active one, with a small secretariat at the College, 19 branches in the UK and 33 overseas, including Canada, The United States, Australia, Africa and the Far East.

Its aims are threefold: to help members keep in touch with one another; to assist the School; and, in cases of need, to give unobtrusive help to members who experience difficulty in meeting Clifton school fees. All members are invited to regular reunions at the School by age group, and receive a copy of the Society's Annual Report which gives details of the School's activities and news of former pupils.

D-Day run to commemorate the 65th anniversary

A fellow Old Cliftonian, Giles Barnes, together with Colonel Michael McErlain, is organising a 44 mile run along the D-Day beaches of Northern France to commemorate the 65th anniversary, starting at Pointe du Hoc and finishing at Pegasus Bridge. It’s a gruelling, demanding run over rough terrain and the runners do this in recognition of fallen and injured servicemen.

It would mean so much if you were able to support this fantastic event by donating to the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen Association (BLESMA) – all you need to do is log on to www.justgiving.com/d-day44 and giving whatever you feel you can.

Announcement

Very sadly, on Thursday 26 March, Mr Louis Sherwood, Council Member, passed away peacefully at home with his family beside him. He had been a member of Council since 1992 and was the Chairman of the Audit & Finance Committee. The College will miss his wise words enormously; he was a fine gentleman and was a great support to all who worked with him. The Memorial Service was held on Friday 24 April at 11am at the Roman Catholic Cathedral. A drinks reception with canapés was held on The Close, near the Pavilion at Clifton College afterwards. The family requested no flowers but donations are welcome for St Peter's Hospice, Bristol.

John Peter Barratt
1935 - 2009

Old Cliftonians will be sad to hear that John Barratt died on Saturday 17th January after a long, brave and uncomplaining fight against Parkinson’s disease.

John’s father, Sir Sydney Barratt, was a former Chairman and President of Clifton between 1958 and 1972. John was in Dakyns’ from 1948 until 1953 when he left, having gained a scholarship in History at King’s College, Cambridge. He qualified but never practised as a solicitor. He returned to teach History at Clifton in 1953, became House Tutor in School House under Michael and Patricia Lane for seven years and was Housemaster of North Town from 1976 to 1989.

John inspired much affection through his kindness, generosity and hospitality, and will be sorely missed by his friends and family.

His Memorial Service was held at Clifton College on Saturday 16th May at 12.15 pm.

Out of Touch

Inevitably we lose many Old Cliftonians addresses since they forget to inform the OC Society of their move. If you meet any of your friends whose address does not appear in the current register, please encourage them to inform the OC Society. Please telephone Bradley Clark on 0117 315 7143 or e-mail him at bclark@clifton-college.avon.sch.uk. If you require any further information then please contact Frances Stretton on fstretton@clifton-college.avon.sch.uk. Thank you.

LATEST UPDATE: SCAST press release FINAL embargoed until 1 June 2007.

The recent investigation by the OFT into a number of independent schools (News Release dated 23 November 2006) did not find that the conduct of the schools concerned had had any effect upon fees. Nevertheless an independent Educational Charitable Trust has been set up for the benefit of pupils who attended the schools involved during the relevant years and further details may be found at http://www.scast.org.uk/.
