Welcome to the Old Cliftonian Society
Old Boys and Girls of Clifton College
The Old Cliftonian Society is a very active one, with a small secretariat at the College, 19 branches in the UK and 33 overseas, including Canada,
The United States, Australia, Africa and the Far East.
Its aims are threefold: to help members keep in touch with one another; to assist the School; and, in cases of need, to give unobtrusive help to
members who experience difficulty in meeting Clifton school fees. All members are invited to regular reunions at the School by age group, and receive
a copy of the Society's Annual Report which gives details of the School's activities and news of former pupils.
Events
We have a number of events throughout the year organised especially for Old Cliftonians.
Paul FG Charteris
I have been commissioned by Henry Charteris to write the biography of his father, Paul F.G. Charteris (BH 1946-55).
He gained his school colours for Rugby XV, as well as swimming and Rugby Fives. He was also a good boxer.
Henry wanted to do something different for his father's 70th birthday and considered
some of Paul's lifetime experiences to be somewhat out of the ordinary! So, as a
permanent and true record, for Paul to enjoy and share with his family, the idea of
a biography was presented to Paul.
This is where I need your help, please, Old Cliftonians!
If anyone has any recollections of time spent with Paul (or Hugo) Charteris and
would be happy to share those memories, please contact me:
mpaxton@hotmail.co.uk.
Alternatively by post, care of Charles Colquhoun, OCS Secretary and Editor of the
Clifton Magazine, OC Office, The Garden Room, 3 Worcester Road, Clifton, Bristol,
BS8 3JL.
Paul served his National Service on submarines. (I understand that he and another
Clifton boy, Ian Killick, were singled out for toilet cleaning duties, as the only
new recruits who had admitted to being former public school boys!)
Paul continued with his rugby, playing for the Royal Navy and for Surrey. His
brother, Hugo, left Clifton in 1960 and their father, Alexander Glen Charteris,
left Clifton in 1923.
Thank you for your help.

Out of Touch
Inevitably we lose many Old Cliftonians addresses since they forget to inform the OC Society of their move. If you meet any of your friends whose address does not appear in the current register, please encourage them to inform the OC Society. Thank you.
Schools Competition Act Settlement Trust
LATEST UPDATE: SCAST press release FINAL embargoed until 1 June 2007.
The recent investigation by the OFT into a number of independent schools (News Release dated 23 November 2006)
did not find that the conduct of the schools concerned had had any effect upon fees. Nevertheless an independent Educational Charitable Trust has been set
up for the benefit of pupils who attended the schools involved during the relevant years and further details may be found at
http://www.scast.org.uk/.
